Its ability to escort bombers all the way to their targets and back without losing effectiveness made it particularly feared. Additionally, its performance at high altitudes and its powerful armament meant that it could effectively engage and often outmaneuver German fighters like the Messerschmitt Bf 109 and Focke-Wulf Fw 190.
